General Information: Nassau, Bahamas
Located just off the southern tip of Florida, The Bahamas consist of over 700 islands, offering miles of white sand beaches surrounding small slivers of land. The city of Nassau, on New Providence Island, is the heart and capital of The Bahamas. The island, once a busy center for piracy, is now home to old fortresses, resort areas, Spring Breakers in March, and too many gorgeous beaches to count. There are two kinds of beaches in The Bahamas. Cable Beach, one of the largest resort areas in Nassau, is the first type of beach, offering luxury hotels, casinos and any service and water sport that you can think of. The second type is a deserted beach where you will find nothing but clear blue water, soft white sand and sunshine as far as the eye can see. This is where you can retreat from the stresses of life. The bars of The Bahamas pride themselves on designing their own special recipes for rum punches, maybe because of The Bahamas' history of rum smuggling. There are two casinos, Crystal Palace at the Marriott in Cable Beach and The Atlantis on Paradise Island. The nightclubs don't really get started until after 11, so pass the early evening hours recovering from your day on the beach in the cool casinos, and then hit the clubs. The two main clubs in Nassau are The Zoo, and The Waterloo, both huge, with mazes of different rooms. Make sure you go to the featured nights of the major tour operators to avoid heavy cover charges! Take a day cruise to Blue Lagoon Island where you can snorkel with stingrays, swim with dolphins or just spend all day in a hammock strung between palm trees. Downtown Nassau, with its winding streets of pastel buildings, offers great deals on shopping-souvenirs, straw markets, jewelry, liquor, perfume. The Queen's Staircase, 65 stairs carved out of coral limestone alongside a man-made canyon, offers a great view of the sea and island. Beyond the town of Nassau, there is a bridge to the island resort of Paradise, which has been transformed into one of the most glamorous resort centers in the world. Spend a day luxuriating in the exclusive pleasures at The Atlantis, a super exclusive resort, casino and waterpark. Whether you're looking for a vacation packed with activities, or to lay around on the beach most of the time, The Bahamas offers both private serenity and plenty of action. A vacation here is whatever you make of it. Create the perfect get-away for yourself in The Bahamas!

Geography

The islands of the Bahamas lie in the southwest Atlantic Ocean near Florida in the USA and stretching down to Cuba. They are known as the 700 islands although there are more than 4,000 islands, islets and cays. There are about fifteen main islands including Cat Island, Bimini, Eleuthera, Exuma, Grand Bahama and New Providence. A total of 40 islands are populated. Two-thirds of the Bahamas is made up of coral formations and hills. Around the islands is found approximately five per cent of the world's coral - coral reefs are important to the world's ecology because they absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Scrub and woodlands cover just under a third of the land. Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, is located on the island of New Providence, one of the smallest of the major islands at a total size of 80 square miles. The center of Nassau has some fine historic buildings and there are some good beaches, but most of the island is covered by sprawling suburbia, scrubby woodland or swamp. Paradise Island, just off the north coast of New Providence, is 826 acres in size. This all resort island, once known as Hog Island, was not developed until the 1950’s. The name was changed after a bridge was built to connect the island with Nassau and the first casino license was granted.

Money

The official currency of the Bahamas is the Bahamian dollar, which is equivalent in value to the US dollar. US currency, including traveler’s checks, is accepted throughout the islands by shops, hotels, restaurants and nightclubs. Most shops and restaurants accept all major credit cards. You may want to notify your credit card company in advance to be sure you are set up to access your card outside of the country. ATM machines can be found in the casinos and at major banks in Nassau. Most bank cards with Cirrus or Visa/MasterCard status can be used; check with your bank before you leave to be sure. Banks are open Monday through Thursday 9:30am to 3pm, and Friday from 9:30am to 5pm.

Documents

You do not need a passport to travel to the Bahamas, however, it is the easiest. You will need a photo ID and an original birth certificate, the one with the raised seal. It always a good idea to make a copy of your documents... just in case. If you are a SCUBA diver, be sure to bring your certification card with you. Dive operators will not allow you to dive or purchase air without it.

Transportation

Most taxis are large vans that can accommodate up to 12 people. The drivers typically do not use the meters so it is a good idea to negotiate the price of the trip before getting in. A full taxi costs an average of $2 to$4 per person, one-way. When returning to Paradise Island from Nassau, there is a $2 bridge toll which passengers are responsible for paying. The local bus operates from 7am to 7pm and cost about $1 one-way. During the day, it is the cheapest and easiest way to get around the island.

Phone Calls

Direct-dial telephone service is available to anywhere from your hotel room but calling collect can be expensive. The best way to contact home is to purchase a Blackstone International Phone Card after you arrive in the Bahamas. Government

The Bahamas became independent, within the Commonwealth, in July 1973. The new Constitution provided for a Governor General to represent the British monarch who is head of state, a nominated 16-member Senate and an elected 49-member, now 40-member House of Assembly, with a parliamentary life of a maximum of five years. The Free National Movement (FNM) holds 35 seats while the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) holds four. A new party, the Coalition for Democratic Reform, has one seat, held by a former PLP member who resigned from the party in 1999. Sir Orville Turnquest, former Attorney General and Minister of Foreign Affairs, was appointed Governor General at the end of 1994.
